Bridget: You're Safe, We Hope
Jennifer Steinhauer of The New York Times reports on Mrs. McCain's zero tolerance policy when it comes to her daughter, who was a target of racism during the 2000 campaign:
Just last year, Bridget, who was born in Bangladesh and is now 15, learned about the episode by chance while doing a Google search of her own name, and went to her mother in tears for an explanation, Mrs. McCain said.
“She wanted to know why President Bush hated her,” Mrs. McCain said of her daughter’s inquiry, during an interview in the family’s condominium here. “And I had to explain to her that it wasn’t the president that hated her, that no one hates her. It was a very maturing process for her. I had to explain to her how nasty campaigns can be.”
...“That I truly believe was a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” Mrs. McCain said. “And I’m now very experienced also, and I also know that if that were to even bubble its head up again, we’d knock that flat.”
It's eight years later, and two biracial candidates are running for President. Times have changed; let's hope such ugliness doesn't happen again in America, and that Bridget can have some fun during this campaign.
