Bridget McCain, Bangladesh, and Burqas
I was wondering when (not if) the press was going to start bringing up Bridget McCain's Bangladeshi-ness to criticize her father. The Detroit Free Press mentioned it first, quoted now by Salon: ... McCain said: "I'm not interested in trading with Al Qaeda. All they want to trade is burqas," he quipped, referring to a type of dress some Muslim women wear.
Local Muslims say that criticizing Al Qaeda is legitimate, but wonder why he would make a snide remark.
The remark was especially bothersome, some said, considering that McCain's adopted daughter, Bridget McCain, is from a Muslim country, Bangladesh.
I don't understand why Bridget's origins make the comment more "bothersome." Are they saying that adopting a baby from a Muslim country should have changed her father's attitudes towards Islam? Or are they suggesting that McCain was dissing his own daughter?
Neither of those conclusions make sense. I'm pretty sure Bridget didn't take her Dad's comment personally. And that Cindy McCain didn't think, "Hey, I'm bringing a Muslim baby home." She, like most parents, thought, "Hey, I'm bringing a baby home."
Besides, Bridget's birthplace shouldn't have anything to do with how you feel about her father's comments. Love them or hate them, but leave her out of this.
